As I predicted, the most likely outcome of the LHC being turned on happened.... it broke.

Yes I am still here. It's just that I tend to post all the stupid little things that I would have blogged to Twitter now. And longer stuff is often family protected.

Note to self: don't speak with a good French accent otherwise people reply in fast, fluent, uncomprehendable Francaise.

Here's some lovely large pictures of the new experiments and detectors at CERN. Very Shiny. Give it a few years though and there'll be PhD students climbing up scaffolding to gaffer tape plastic sheets over it.
 

Large Hadron Collider nearly ready - The Big Picture

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a 27 kilometer (17 mile) long particle accelerator straddling the border of Switzerland and France, is nearly set to begin its first particle beam tests. The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is preparing for its first small tests in early August, leading to a planned full-track test in September - and the first planned particle collisions before the end of the year. The final step before starting is the chilling of the entire collider to -271.25 C (-456.25 F). Joss Whedon decided to show his latest creation on the web, in three acts, with staggered release dates. Then shortly after revealing the last act take it offline and offer it on iTunes to buy. This is the sort of plan that should annoy me. Fortunately for Joss Whedon Dr. Horrible is a masterpiece.

It's the story of a minor criminal and his desire to rule the world so that he can get the girl of his dreams. Oh, and it's a musical. The songs are catchy and funny, the acting is perfect, the story is genius. I could watch it again and again and again.

Unfortunately it's not yet available on iTunes UK, and the DVD isn't out yet, and the soundtrack CD isn't out yet. Please hurry up.
